8 Reasons Artists Should Sell Music on Vinyl
December 19, 2023
So many artists have released their albums in vinyl format in recent years so that if you’re a musician, you’d start to wonder if it’s a good idea to do the same thing.

Well, let me tell you this: you should have released one yesterday! Especially because vinyl pressing like UnifiedMFG vinyl pressing is so accessible and affordable these days that it’s almost a crime not to.

Why sell your music on vinyl?

Need more convincing?

Here are some legit reasons why it’s great to release your album on vinyl today:

1. People are not buying CDs anymore

According to the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), CD album sales in the United States have dropped by 97 percent since peaking in 2000 and are currently at their lowest level since 1986. Basically, it means CDs are dead.

If people aren't into CDs anymore, then why sell them?

2. You have to sell something physical

Of course you can’t just let your fans stream especially because there’s very little money to be made from streaming. You have to sell something they can actually take with them when they leave your show. Music in USB flash drives is becoming a thing but it’s not really something that’s so appealing, isn’t it? No one wants a collection of flash drives in their living room.

So fans are craving vinyl. If you’re going on tour, you have to put something awesome on your music merch table.

3. Vinyl pressing is now so easy

You can have small-run vinyl pressing for 100 units or even fewer these days. Plus, technology and good vinyl mastering has made it possible to make your vinyl sound good even if your files are digital.

And unlike in the 60s where you still have to visit your vinyl pressing plant, you can just easily send everything and monitor everything without stepping out of your house. They can even ship the vinyl directly to your fans.

4. Vinyl is more impressive than digital

Unlike CDs, the vinyl format has inherent value. It’s not just something that you can easily dispose of because it’s not just something that contains music, it’s a piece of art!

From the vinyl record itself to the vinyl cover…you have something more than just something to listen to.

Hey, it’s no wonder people collect vinyl and not digital files!

5. Vinyl legitimises you

There are thousands of musicians releasing their first album each year. What will set you apart from the new ones just “testing the waters” of an indie music career is that you actually release your music. And not just in iTunes, in vinyl!

Vinyl gives an impression that you’re not an amateur. After all, you’re willing to spend some time actually making an album that’s good enough for vinyl. Now, not everybody can do that!

6. You don’t have to spend big bucks to make vinyl

Many decades ago, you had to have some money to throw away for you to even consider pressing some vinyl. Aside from the higher minimum number of units, you need to market them.

But since we have the internet, we can just easily pre-sell vinyl and order on-demand in chunks of 50, for example. All you need to invest in is a good master. That’s why it also makes sense to release an album you released some time ago that you consider a hit. That way, you’re sure there’s absolutely no risk you’ll lose any money.

7. Vinyl can make people talk

Good music is good music but if you release a good vinyl, people will not only talk about how awesome your music is, they’ll talk about your lovely vinyl record.

That means you’ll attract not just your fans but vinyl and art aficionados as well.

These people will talk about your vinyl through their social media. They will share photos and videos of your vinyl record spinning on their Instagram and Facebook. They can’t do the same thing to your music stream. Well, they can post a screenshot of your cover art but...it’s nothing compared to vinyl.

8. Vinyl is simply awesome

Well, we could go on and on about the practical reasons why you should release your album on vinyl. But the only thing that could probably convince you is that vinyl is awesome. You know it, we know it, just about everybody knows it.

If you press in vinyl, you’ll be in the same league as the greats. It’s something that you’ll be proud to make. Trust me, ten years from now, you’ll look at your vinyl record and feel great about your music and of course, yourself.

If you’re a musician or artist of any kind, pressing music on vinyl is something you should do for yourself and for your fans. You see, there’s too much digital music. You can get them anytime and anywhere you want. But vinyl? It’s special. And that’s why it never goes out of style.
