Digital Distribution Payouts in 2014 Shows Promising News For Musicians On Spotify
January 15, 2015
There was a lot of talk in 2014 about Spotify payouts and certain artists removing their music from the platform. There are thousands of artists on Spotify and each one has their own take on the discussion based on their own circumstances. It may work for some people, it may not work for others.
We work with independent artists. People who book their own shows, release their own music and work as hard as possible to build fans. Mostly without the help of radio, TV or the same levels of support that a major label artist would receive. Many of these musicians use Spotify to grow their fanbase. A recent example we published was Ditto distributed American Aquarium who played over 300 shows in 2014 and attributed their high ticket sales to letting their music be shared and played for free on Spotify.
The good news is that since Spotify started, payouts to indie artists has been increasing. While iTunes accounted for around 90% of artist revenues in 2010. In 2014 iTunes makes up around 50% of revenue from online sales, with Spotify making up around 30% in 2014.
Anyway, here are our figures from all stores in 2014. Here is to a successful 2015 for independent musicians everywhere!
