Hello!
What if I will release some songs that I have not wrote by myself (Cover versions)?
Is it possible to release those songs via Ditto Music?
Best Regards
H Hultberg
Hi
Yes, its definitely possible.
As long as you haven’t drastically changed the original, ie a remix, then you are free to release a cover version digitally.
PRS is already taken from the sites so you dont have to worry about that.
If you have any other questions please check out our getsatisfaction account on the left hand side.
That way the questions get logged and everyone can check them out in the future.
All the best
Lee
hi
i would like to know i release a song on spotify and it people don’t listen to it would i still get paid and would i get paid more if people listen to it
thanks james
Hi James
You get paid .02p every time someone plays your track, you also get a share of Spotify ad revenue, based on how many plays you get.
Hope that helps
Robyn
Hi,
I’d just like to confirm re releasing a cover version. It’s just because your terms and conditions make a definite statement in paragraph 6 “You warrant, agree and undertake both ob behalf of yourself that the Works are original to you and have not been copied etc etc..
I presume there you are referring to the recorded work and not the composition.
I have an album where 2 of the tracks are covers — and I’m interested in your deals — but need this to be confirmed
Hi Tim
You are fine to release cover versions digitally, as long as you havent drastically changed the song, ie a remix.
The PRS is paid through the sites already.
Best
Lee
If the figures are correct for Spotify then to make £200/$360 you would need 1,000,000 plays (excluding advertising revenue)…
hi!
if a make a song on a beat that someone else have made, is it stil possible to get it out on spotify?
i dont own the rights to the music but i wont make any money from it so therefor its legal? or am i wrong.
Hi Emil. You could contact the MCPS to get clearance for any samples that you may use, we won’t be able to distibute that unless you do i’m afraid. Thanks
Hi!
What do I need to do if I want to release a song through Spotify? It is self-written. And is it possible for me to earn anything by doing this?
Regards,
Simen
Hi, Admin you seem to be contradicting yourselves. If it’s .02p per play (as in 0.02 of a penny) 10000 plays would be £2. Whereas if it’s 10000 plays for £200 it’s 2p per play. Which is it?
@Mike…
Judging by the figures I’ve seen, it would appear to be even less. Otherwise 29 plays would be worth more than 0.2 pence!
Even @ 5.8 pence ( which it would be at 0.02 p ) it’s still makes you wonder if paying £2 a month is of any value when the artist can make more royalties from actual ‘real’ radio play without the need to pay the station in advance.
PS. Have a read of this & see if it’s still worth it…

Makes for interesting reading.
Guys i think the value of Spotify is less cut and dry than instant financial gains. Its about your brand and making your music as widely available as possible.
.02 pence is the base PRS rate but there is also the payment from Spotify as well as share of ad revenue.
We have an interview with Jacob from Spotify going up next week which should answer all of these questions.

There seems to be some confusion over whether it is £0.02 (two pence) or .02p (point zero two pence, or a 50th of a penny) that each Spotify play earns you. The FAQ states £0.02p, but here 0.02p has been written. Very interested to hear which it is.
Agreed. I assumed it was £0.02 per play. Will look forward to finding out.
It’s .02 pence. Which means 5 plays = 1 pence.
If that being the case & you have an album of 10 songs you would think you’d get 2 pence once it’s played the whole way through… But NO! You’d get zip, zero, naff all!
It’s PER TRACK which means each song HAS to be played FIVE TIMES in the same month to = 1 pence. So another words an album of 10 tracks played five times = 10 pence.
If you have a song that’s played 1000 times a month then you get your £2 subscription fee back.
If your whole album is played 1000 times in the same month then you’re making a profit.
James, it’s gloomier than that I’m afraid 50 plays = 1pence.
Seriously though dittomusic claiming £0.02p per play is misleading advertising. A legal case could be made here.
How much do dittomusic make per play on Spotify and what percentage of that is passed onto the artists?
Hello.
I was wondering if I could put songs into Spotify, even if it wasn’t made by me. I have these songs that I really want to share with other Spotify users (not made by me). Those are not cover versions, it is originally made by that artist who I want to put on Spotify.
Hi
Actually we stated that it is .02 pence , which is not £0.02 and if you check out the interview that we did with Spotify you will notice that there is no definite figure.
The best thing to do, if you are interested in finding exact details is contact PRS for music.
Spotify is a fantastic form of promotion and we are pleased to be helping bridge the gap between unsigned artists and new platforms like Spotify.
Hi Mike
If there were any typos they have been removed. We are the only distributor that have gone straight to the source and interviewed Spotify to gain clarification on payments.
We take no commission on any Spotify plays and are simply here to facilitate unsigned artists getting their content up.
If you check our blogs , and our interview with Spotify then you will see that Spotify are unable to give an exact figure as it is confidential to the PRS.
Statements from Spotify go directly back to the artist so the easiest way to check revenue is to look at your Royaltyshare account.
We were the first distributor to gain a contract with Spotify and continue to work hard to create new opportunities for unsigned artists including our new contracts with both Mflow and Sky Songs.
Our job isnt to decide whether Spotify is right of wrong for each individual artist, it is simply to give you the same chances that a signed artist would have.
